Voice & Fortepiano * Belcanto Song Recital

The aesthetics and vocals of bel canto are usually associated with the Italian operatic context, but their spirit and expression are also found in varied repertoires outside the opera universe. This recital proposes a reunion with “da camera” songs for voice and piano composed between the century  XIX and beginning of the century XX, interpreted with the accompaniment of a pianoforte, the instrument that preceded the modern piano.

The songs included in this program refer to bel canto expressions in an Italian and French language repertoire, which have in common the elegance and fluid interpretation of the vocal coloratura, characteristics of this style.

Although the term bel canto has not been used before the middle of the century. XIX, was present, as an interpretative style, from the end of the century. XVIII, also influencing the chamber music. Among the composers featured are Italians Vincenzo Bellini (1801-35), and four of his ariette (composed in the 1820s), Luigi Denza (1846-1922), composer of the famous “Funiculì, Funiculà”, and Paolo Tosti (1846-1916) that, like Denza, was celebrated by songs of style Neapolitan.

The program also includes works by the French composer of Venezuelan origin, Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947), who dedicated himself mainly to the composition of vocal repertoire.
